
Dr. Tracy Fanara
Environmental Engineer, Scientist, and Television Presenter

Dr. Tracy Fanara is an environmental engineer, scientist, and television presenter with a BS, ME, and Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Tracy spent almost a decade as a project engineer, designing hydrodynamic systems around the world. Tracy takes an interdisciplinary approach to answering scientific questions with expertise in stormwater hydrology, ecotoxicology, microbiology, oceanography, and water treatment. Tracy managed the Environmental Health Research Program at Mote Marine Laboratory, which focused on harmful algae bloom research and mitigation. Tracy developed citizen science programs, smart phone applications, and redeveloped a website to collect publicly available environmental data gaining over 2 million users. She worked under a NASA grant with a NOAA team to develop technology and a program for volunteers to contribute quantitative data via a cellphone microscope and machine learning algorithms. Tracy gained international recognition for her role in communicating during the 2018 Florida Water Crisis. Until recently, Tracy was the Coastal Modeling Portfolio Manager for the National Ocean Service (NOAA/NOS) where she managed coastal and ocean modeling efforts mitigate threats to human lives and livelihoods on our coasts. Tracy is the Founder of Inspector Planet LLC which provides services including hydrologic and ecologic forecasting, science education, and training for scientists to better communicate their science in a consumable and impactful way. Tracy spends time outside of work on the ocean, diving in caves, running STEM and environmental camps for middle and high school girls (Mission: Tampa Bay), unearthing dinosaurs, tagging sharks, saving alligators, and communicating science. Tracy is on the Board of the Center for Coastal Solutions, is the Chair of the AMS Committee on Ecoforecasting, was a finalist to go to the moon on a SpaceX mission; she was a National Science Foundation SPICE Fellow, an EPA Rainworks Challenge Champion twice, was named Xylem YSI’s Mission: Water Hero, and was featured in Marvel’s Unstoppable Wasp which led to her co-produced comic series, Seekers of Science. You may have seen Tracy on Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week,” “Mythbusters” or “What on Earth,” on The Weather Channel shows including “AMHQ” and “Weird Earth,” on National Geographic’s “When Sharks Attack” or on ABC’s educational series, “Animal Outtakes.”
